Systems Administrator at Sports Media Start-Up (San Francisco)
Yardbarker is a fast-growing sports media startup located in downtown San Francisco. We own and operate our own destination site (Yardbarker.com) and host the blogs for 100s of well-known athletes (including Donovan McNabb, Greg Oden, Santonio Holmes, Gina Carano, and more). We also manage a network of 600 independent sports blogs. We have a small but talented team. We are growing quickly, and we need a top-notch systems administrator to help us take things to the next level.
Required Skills:
- 3-5 years experience in Linux Systems Administration
- You are excited to work in a start-up. You understand what this entails (ideally from your own experience), and you thrive on the freedom and challenge that comes with it.
- You've worked with Ruby (and Ruby on Rails) in the past, and understand the requirements of Rails deployments.
- High degree of comfort with a variety of TCP/IP protocols -- HTTP, SMTP, NFS, etc.
- Ability to understand and write Ruby programs (including Capistrano deployment scripts).
- Intermediate (at least) knowledge of MySQL.
- Strong communication skills.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Self-direction and attention to detail.
- Self-motivated with a strong desire to build/maintain a scalable and reliable infrastructure.
- Excitement about life, and a passion for building something great. Bonus Points:
- Prior experience with tools like monit, munin and nagios
- Experience with a large-scale Rails deployment, including the Capistrano deployment framework.
- Familiarity with MySQL replication
- Experience with various version control systems (such as subversion or git).
- Experience with nginx.
- Previous experience with multi-tier, clustered service architecture
- Familiarity with automation tools (kickstart, puppet, etc)
- You like sports! Responsibilities:
- Recurring system maintenance (log rotation, backups, package upgrades, etc) and administration
- Monitoring output of system performance meters and gauges
- Participation in notification / alert / escalation chain for system events
- Work closely with engineering team to support new features (systems configuration, testing, etc)
- Maintain technical reference documentation (wiki)
- Ensure that our systems are scalable and reliable.
- Management of internal network infrastructure, connectivity, etc. Compensation depends on experience, but will include both salary and equity.
